Young , Delmon, LF D. Young showing life?: Twins OF Delmon Young hit just .218 in August, but went 6 for 20 (.300) over his last five games of the month. (Updated 09/02/2010) After striking out just seven times in July, Young went down on Ks a ridiculous 19 times in August, which shows how tough he was having it at the plate. Still, Young is putting up career numbers across the board this season and remains a solid starting option in the majority of Fantasy formats. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Upton , Justin, RF Upton still missing for Arizona: Arizona OF Justin Upton remained out of the lineup Wednesday against San Diego after he left Monday's game with left shoulder pain from a bad swing on a foul-tip strikeout in his last at-bat. Upton is sore and is considered day to day. (Updated 09/01/2010) It was reported that Upton is simply sore and doesn't have a more severe injury than that. That is why we expect him back in action over the next game or so. Upton has warmed up and has nine hits in his last five games with four RBI. Start him in all mixed Fantasy leagues, when he gets healthy again. (Updated 09/01/2010). |
Jones, Garrett, RF G. Jones showing more power: Pirates 1B Garrett Jones went 1 for 4 with a walk, a homer and three RBI at the Cubs on Tuesday. The homer was his third in his last eight games, but he's batting only .206 (7 for 34) during that stretch. (Updated 09/01/2010) Jones hit only .144 (15 for 104) for the month of August, pretty much negating the benefit of his six home runs. He doesn't look anything like the hitter who took the National League by storm late last year. He'll deliver little more than the occasional home run, making him just a low-end option in mixed leagues. (Updated 09/01/2010). |
Hermida , Jeremy, LF Hermida released by Red Sox: Boston released OF Jeremy Hermida on Tuesday, reports the Boston Globe. Hermida had not played for the Red Sox since July 30 against Detroit. He was down in the minors. (Updated 08/31/2010) Hermida played in 52 games for Boston this season and managed to hit .203 with five homers and 27 RBI before they shipped him out. The 26-year-old former prospect could wind up somewhere else, but these days he is no more than a project. He should be ignored in Fantasy. (Updated 08/31/2010). |
Morneau , Justin, 1B Morneau still not near return: Justin Morneau was absent at Target Field when his Minnesota Twins returned home to open a three-game series against Detroit, and he may be out for a while as recovers from a concussion that happened nearly two months ago. Doctors told Morneau to stay at home until at least Friday, manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday. Gardenhire said it wasn't a setback and that Morneau would continue to do some cardio work and other workouts from home. "He's following doctors' orders," Gardenhire said. "He's doing exactly what they want him to do." (Updated 08/31/2010) The manager declined to go any further into a condition that doesn't appear to have improved considerably since the All-Star first baseman was injured sliding into second base in Toronto on July 8. Morneau has experienced lingering symptoms from the concussion ever since, but many were encouraged when he started taking swings and joining the team in the dugout for some home games a few weeks ago. Fantasy owners have nothing to do but continue to wait and monitor his progress. (Updated 08/31/2010). |
Beltran , Carlos, CF Slumping Beltran takes a seat: Mets OF Carlos Beltran was not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Braves. Beltran is batting just .217 in August and has started 37 of the club's 43 games since he was activated off the disabled list. Manager Jerry Manuel thinks Beltran's struggles are the result of the slugger trying to do too much. "He's trying to make up for lost time, trying to hit that three-run homer when nobody's on base, trying to do more than what is called for at this time," Manuel told MLB.com. "I think a day here and there does him more good mentally than physically." (Updated 08/30/2010) Manuel said his decision to give Beltran the day off had nothing to do with his surgically repaired knee. He has just two hits in his last 19 at-bats and has struggled to get his timing back at the plate. He's a much better player than this, but it's beginning to look like he can be written off in 2010. He should only be used in deeper mixed leagues until he starts hitting again. (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Pudge collects 2,800 career hit: Washington catcher Ivan Rodriguez went 1 for 5 in Friday's loss to St. Louis, but his hit did have some meaning. Rodriguez's single in the sixth inning was his 2,800th career hit. The veteran stranded four men on base -- the Nationals left a season-high 14 men on base in the game -- and saw his average drop to .269 on the year. (Updated 08/28/2010) Rodriguez is in the twilight of his career as he doesn't produce enough at the plate to be a big-time Fantasy option. With two home runs, 35 RBI and 25 runs scored, Pudge is holding onto value as a No. 2 catching option in the deepest of mixed leagues and NL-only Fantasy formats. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
Crede , Joe, 3B ChiSox not interested in Crede: The Sports Xchange reports 3B Joe Crede has been out of baseball since back problems again hampered him in the 2009 season with the Twins. GM Ken Williams was asked recently if the former Sox third baseman would ever get a call, especially with Mark Teahen on the shelf for at least six weeks with a fractured right middle finger. His reply came without hesitation -- a big "no." (Updated 06/07/2010) Crede, a career .254 hitter, has not played in over 100 games since 2006 and will have minimal Fantasy value even if he gets picked up by a team. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 06/07/2010). |
Matsui , Kazuo, 2B Matsui happy to be with Rockies: Rockies 2B Kazuo Matsui is 4 for 14 since joining Triple-A Colorado Springs and has been welcomed by the fans. "I am honored to be welcomed like that way," Matsui told MLB.com. "I didn't expect that at all." This is the switch-hitters second time around with the Rockies, after being released by the Astros on May 20. "I am very grateful to the Rockies for giving me another chance. I will do my best to get the good result. I am still confident I can get back to the Majors," he said. (Updated 05/31/2010) Matsui had a solid year his one season in Colorado but it is not even a given that he will make it back to the majors in 2010. He is not worth stashing away and would be an NL-only option when called up. (Updated 05/31/2010). |
Sheffield , Gary, RF Sheffield has offers on table: Gary Sheffield told the New York Post that his body is ready for a 22nd major league season, he just isn't 100 percent sure yet that his mind is ready for the rigors. Sheffield told the Post that he's got offers on the table from teams and that it is just a matter of deciding which, if any, he wants to accept. There are things on the table that I have to accept or not accept," the former Mets and Yankees slugger told The Post on Wednesday. Right now I have not made up my mind." Apparently, the Mets are not one of the teams who have contacted him. I have a few things to weigh," said Sheffield, who hit his 500th homer as a Met and has 509. When you get ready to go through a spring training you have to make sure its worth it." (Updated 02/23/2010) The aging slugger insists his body is ready for another year in the majors but until he actually signs with a team and shows up at spring training, he really has no Fantasy value. Playing with the Mets last year as a 40-year-old, Sheffield hit .276 with 10 homers and 43 RBI over 100 games and 268 at bats. (Updated 02/23/2010). |
Thome , Jim, DH Thome remains out with lower back stiffness.(Updated 9/3/10) STATS LLCAdvice Thome was held out again Tuesday. He is listed as day-to-day. Thome is listed as day to day. At this stage in his career, however, that is just about an inescapable fact. He still has enough pop in his bat to be useful in AL-only formats and deeper mixed leagues, but he is merely a stopgap when healthy. Fantasy owners should expect him back over the weekend but continue to monitor his progress before inserting Thome back into their lineups. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Chavez, Raul, C No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Chavez backed up Rod Barajas in Toronto last season, but lost his job to Jose Molina this spring. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 03/31/2010). |
Drew , Stephen, SS No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Drew has been on fire of late, batting .380 with four homers and nine RBI over his 11 games. He did not homer at all in June and July, but is making up for it in a big way now. Fantasy owners should make sure Drew is active in all formats while he is on this incredible tear. He should be active in all formats heading into Fantasy Week 22 (Aug.30-Sept.5). (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Weeks , Rickie, 2B No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Weeks is having a rough week, but he's done enough through the year for Fantasy owners to forgive a bad week. With a .271 average, 24 homers, 74 RBI and 88 runs scored, Weeks is having a career year. He is one of the best Fantasy 2B and should be in every lineup heading into Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Wigginton , Ty, 3B No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Wigginton has played in 21 games in August and has gone 22 for 85 (.259) with four homers and 10 RBI. He certainly isn't as hot as he was early in the season but the All-Star continues to do the little things for Baltimore. Wigginton has showed a lot of fire and determination this season and his ability to play multiple positions, as well as his pop, makes him viable in many deeper mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/22/2010). |
Stanton, Mike , of No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Stanton is mired in an awful slump right now and the two days off did not seem to straighten him out. He still has 14 homers and 39 RBI in 68 games this season but has not gone deep or recorded an RBI since Aug. 13. Fantasy owners in deeper mixed leagues might want to keep him on the bench for the upcoming scoring period but hold onto him long-term keeper leagues as he will supply plenty of power for years to come. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Walden, Jordan , rhp No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Injuries have delayed Walden's arrival to the majors but he has been able to stay healthy this season and put up solid numbers in the minors. The 6-foot-5 reliever could make an immediate impact in the Angels bullpen but won't be in line to earn many saves. Fantasy owners in the deepest of AL-only formats that value middle men might want to take a flier on the 22-year-old for the rest of this season but hold onto Walden in long-term keeper leagues as he has a bright future. (Updated 08/22/2010). |
Cook, Aaron, S Toe - 15-day DL. On Double-A rehab assignment. Expected to make Sept. 2 start vs. Philadelphia (Updated - 8/28/10) Cook is 4-8 with a 5.34 ERA on the season and has been out since Aug. 3 with this toe injury. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor Cook to see if he does in fact return to the Rockies. When healthy, Cook in merely an NL-only Fantasy option and can be ignored by most owners. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Buchholz is 15-5 with a 2.21 ERA in his 23 starts this year for the Red Sox. He leads the American League with his ERA and is pitching like an ace for Boston this year. He hasn't lost since July 21 and gone 5-0 with a 1.47 ERA over his last seven starts. He should be viewed as a must-start Fantasy option heading into Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). He's scheduled to face the White Sox on Friday. In two starts against Chicago, Buchholz is 0-1 with a 14.09 ERA. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Girardi thinks Burnett will be able to turn it around to help the Yankees push for the playoffs. Fantasy owners hope so to as he's been costing them the past few weeks. "He's done it before in his career where he's had struggles and he's come back and had long periods of time where he's been on track," Girardi said. "Sometimes it seems harder than others. It's basically the same principles." In August, Burnett is 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA. Burnett is slated to start on Wednesday against Oakland, but Girardi may switch up the rotation after Sunday's game. Keep an eye on this potential situation heading into Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). With Contreras being effective, the Phillies are more comfortable handing him the ball in close games. Despite his struggles at times this season, Contreras has proved to be a bargain and beneficial asset in Philadelphia's bullpen. He has 48 strikeouts to just 13 walks in 46 innings of work this year. He's also gone 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 54 appearances, the most of his career. While he isn't getting saves, Contreras still has some Fantasy value, but it is marginal. He is an NL-only Fantasy option in leagues that value true middle men. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Davis, Doug, S Elbow - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/26/10) Davis, 1-4 with a 7.51 ERA over eight starts prior to getting injured, has been down with the injury since July 9. He was returning from a different stint on the DL at that point, too. Injuries have limited him all year and Davis really only has value, when healthy, in NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/11/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Delcarmen has been relied upon in important situations by the Red Sox in the past, but hasn't pitched particularly well this season. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy play for now. (Updated 07/17/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Marmol is having a rough August but has been able to continue his high-strikeout rate. He has 18 in 12 2/3 innings pitched this month and 109 overall. It is always a journey with him in the ninth inning but Marmol remains a solid option in most mixed leagues as long as he is closing out games in Chicago. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Hammel earned a no-decision in each of his last two outings but was able to buck the trend with a nice win on Sunday. It would have been nice to see him pitch a little bit deeper into the game but he got his pitch count up too high early on. "I struggled with command," Hammel said. "I was behind too many hitters, threw way too many pitches and that's what basically caused me not to get deep [in the game]." He has a 4.06 ERA in August and remains a low-end option in deeper mixed leagues heading into Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). His next start is scheduled for Friday at the Padres. Hammel is 2-0 with a 4.19 ERA in three starts against San Diego this season. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Head - 15-day DL. On Triple-A rehab assignment (Updated - 8/27/10) Nippert had a strong showing in his first rehab outing and threw 14 of his 16 pitches for strikes. He has not pitched since July 19 and posted a 5.36 ERA in 28 appearances (two starts) before being sidelined with the injury. This was a good first step in his return to the majors but seeing as he will likely pitch out of the bullpen when healthy. Fantasy owners in AL-only formats that utilize middle men should be the only one's concerned with Nippert at this point. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
Ray, Chris, R Rib - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/23/10) Ray was 5-0 with 4.05 ERA and two saves this season. He has been used in a variety of ways out of the bullpen this season, but will most likely return to middle relief role once activated. He can be ignored outside of leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Leake, Mike, rhp Shoulder - 15-day DL. Might be out for season (Updated - 8/27/10) Leake's first big-league season started with a bang, as he moved straight from college ball into the Reds' rotation, and he produced a 3.53 ERA in the first half. "We think it's better for him," manager Dusty Baker said. "He still may be eligible for down the stretch and the playoffs. He's not throwing the ball where he wants to throw it, even though he has good velocity. He's been examined by the doctors. Since he has a little shoulder fatigue - we were going to try to do something with him anyway. We think now it's time for him to get on a strengthening program and not worry about pitching as much." Now it appears he is going out with a whimper, as he goes from the rotation to the bullpen to the DL. Leake can be dropped from nearly all current-season formats, but he is worth stashing in long-term keeper leagues because of his upside. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
Baez, Danys, R Back - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/27/10) Baez's move to the DL won't affect many owners, as he was pitching in a middle relief role, and not all that frequently or effectively. Baez has posted a 5.14 ERA on the season. He can be dropped, as his production can be easily replaced by other relievers who are available on waivers. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
Mathis, Doug, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Mathis is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues. (Updated 07/31/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Dessens has done well since being called up from Triple-A. He has only allowed one earned run in 7 2/3 innings. Dessens is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 06/09/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Belisle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point. (Updated 08/11/2010). |
