Newark Warpigs Current News

Betemit , Wilson, 3B

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha on May 25, Betemit has surprised by hitting .350 over 89 at-bats with four homers and 12 RBI. "I just wanted to go up there and have quality at-bats," Betemit said. "I didn't want to just go up there and swing. I want to go up there, get a good a good pitch to hit and have a good at-bat." While he doesn't offer much power for a corner infielder, he has been hitting for very solid average and has shown a solid ability to get on base. He can be used in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues, if you like, now that he's the regular third baseman. (Updated 07/28/2010).

Cedeno, Ronny, SS

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

What has gotten into Cedeno lately? He is batting .407 (22 for 54) in his last 15 games. He has 10 doubles, one triple, one homer and six RBI in that span. He even has two stolen bases. We would like to tell Fantasy owners this hot streak can last, but with Cedeno, he just doesn't have the track record to prove it. He is probably only worth starting in NL-only and Rotisserie formats until we see some long-term consistency. (Updated 07/26/2010).

Crosby , Bobby, SS

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Crosby has earned his spot as the everyday shortstop by going 12 for 36 over his last 11 games. Still, the Pirates would probably rather have a productive Cedeno in the lineup. Cedeno just hasn't been able to produce. While Crosby remains in the lineup almost every day, he still really only has value in NL-only Fantasy leagues due to a lack of pop in his bat. (Updated 07/06/2010).

Hamilton , Josh, CF

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Hamilton is showing no signs of slowing down during his career year. In 13 second-half games, he's batting .440 (22 for 50) with seven doubles and 10 RBI. He's only homered once in his last 16 games, but Hamilton is a no-brainer to keep active in every and any Fantasy league. (Updated 07/29/2010).

Glaus , Troy, 3B

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Glaus is a streaky hitter, but this cold snap has been going on for some time. Sunday's double was his second in his last three games, so this could be the modest beginning of a better stretch of games. Glaus has the potential to bust out, just as he did this past May, but until he shows he is back on track, owners in standard mixed leagues should keep him stashed. (Updated 07/25/2010).

Lopez , Jose, 2B

0010-07-29

Hamstring - Doubtful for July 29 at Chicago White Sox (Updated - 7/29/10)

Lopez is batting just .209 in the month of July. He should be considered day to day and Fantasy owners in daily formats should adjust lineups accordingly in the meantime. He has had a disappointing season to this point, but has been showing a bit more power recently and remains a player worthy of activating in deeper mixed formats and AL-only leagues given the scarcity of 2B options and his solid upside. (Updated 07/29/2010).

Maier, Mitch, CF

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Maier has never been much of a power hitter. In fact, he's never offered much of anything offensively since breaking into the majors in 2006. Since he's just a reserve outfielder now, you wouldn't want to use him outside of the deepest of AL-only leagues. (Updated 07/08/2010).

Mathis , Jeff, C

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Mathis has played in 16 games in July thus far and is batting .234 (11 for 47) with two homers and four RBI with 15 strikeouts. Mathis has yet to turn it on after an extended stint on the disabled list and, at the moment, is not really worth using in mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 07/25/2010).

Ortiz , David, DH

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Ortiz had faced an inordinate number of left-handers coming out of the All-Star break, and they are his kryptonite. He had slowed down a good bit since hitting 16 homers over May and June, so maybe this is the start of another hot streak. He has proven capable of performing like one of the top sluggers in baseball. You just have to play matchups with him. Now seems like a good time to start him. (Updated 07/27/2010).

Quentin , Carlos, LF

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Quentin is expected to get some playing time at DH, with the White Sox looking to ease the fragile player back into the lineup and keep him healthy. Fantasy owners who continue to be frustrated by his inability to stay healthy should be glad to hear the White Sox are trying their best to keep him in the lineup however possible. The fact remains that when he's healthy enough to play, he remains a solid start in any format. (Updated 07/24/2010).

Shoppach , Kelly, C

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Shoppach doesn't get regular at-bats for the Rays, which severely limits his Fantasy value. He should be considered an AL-only option at this stage in the game. (Updated 07/26/2010).

Brantley, Michael, CF

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

With a .157 average through 102 at-bats this season, Brantley just didn't make enough contact to stick around in Cleveland for now. The 23-year-old hit superbly in the minors until he reached Triple-A, where he hit .267 last season, and maybe he's just not ready for the bigs just yet. Feel free to cut Brantley in seasonal formats, but he remains worth holding on to in deeper long-term keeper leagues. (Updated 07/27/2010).

Rosales, Adam, 3B

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Rosales has enjoyed a fine month so far in July. He's batting .368 (14 for 38) with two doubles, two homers, eight RBI and one steal. Unfortunately, because he doesn't play every day he's best suited for daily Fantasy leagues. (Updated 07/23/2010).

Braden, Dallas, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

The nine consecutive starts without a victory after a no-hitter was the longest such streak in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Chicago's Mark Buehrle -- who beat the A's here Friday night -- went eight outings without a win last year after his perfect game on July 23, 2009. Braden insists the funk didn't frustrate him. He is most thrilled to be back helping the team. "Wins and losses is what everybody pays attention to. It is so glaring. That's the soup of the day," Braden said. "There's a lot of luck involved winning a big league baseball game." Braden showed improved command of his pitches and seemed unfazed when he fell behind early. "He's a character, a goofy son of a gun. That's all I can say. I don't see anything special," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen joked. "He throws strikes and changes speeds and he gives his team a good chance to win, but I don't see anything special. Congratulations on the perfect game but, if Mark Buehrle can throw a perfect game anybody can." Braden is not a power pitcher by any stretch of the imagination, but he can be a viable mixed-league Fantasy option in larger formats. His next scheduled start is for Saturday in a rematch with Chicago. (Updated 07/25/2010).

Casilla, Santiago, R

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Casilla has pitched well for the Giants this season. He does have 13 walks in 16 2/3 innings, but only allowed three runs over his last 11 appearances. Still, Casilla does not get many save opportunities and should be left for deeper NL-only leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 07/10/2010).

Shields, James, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Shields has now won back-to-back starts and has gone 3-1 thus far over five July outings. Tuesday's start was actually the first time he'd allowed fewer than three runs in a start since May 25 against Boston. He's had a couple rough outings since but as long as Tampa is in a pennant race, Shields will remain a solid option in mixed Fantasy leagues. His next outing is scheduled for Week 17 (July 26-Aug. 1) on Sunday against the Yankees. He is 1-0 against New York in three starts this season with a 3.86 ERA but is just 2-7 overall for his career with a 5.45 earned run average. (Updated 07/27/2010).

Wakefield, Tim, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Wakefield has been ineffective as a starter this season, going 3-8 with a 5.47 ERA. But as a reliever, his Fantasy value is negligible. He can be ignored outside of AL-only leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 07/22/2010).

Balfour, Grant, C

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Balfour has been a very efficient arm out of the bullpen for the Rays, especially against right-handers. He is holding right-handed batters to under a .200 average in 2010. Unfortunately, without any save chances, Balfour is merely a flier in Fantasy leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 06/20/2010).

Davies, Kyle, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Davies was also happy to avoid the unique distinction of giving up two major milestone home runs to the same player. Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run off Davies at the old Yankee Stadium in 2008 and Rodriguez entered play Saturday stuck on 599 home runs. Davies may have been just the guy to give up the homer with the way he has been giving up the long ball of late. He has given up six homers over his last three starts. Starting a Royals pitcher not named Zack Greinke can be tough in most Fantasy scenarios, and continued erratic performances from Davies don't help his cause. He hadn't won since May 28 prior to Saturday and remains just a low-end AL-only stopgap measure for his next start against the Orioles. (Updated 07/24/2010).

Berken, Jason, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Berken is 1-1 with three holds, two blown saves and an ERA of 7.00 during July. As a setup man for the Orioles, his Fantasy value is limited. He can be ignored outside of AL-only leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 07/22/2010).

McDonald, James , R

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

McDonald has potential and didn't get much of a chance after one look earlier this month. Consider him a potential sleeper in deeper leagues, mostly NL-only formats, if he gets another chance to start. Otherwise, he is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men. (Updated 07/28/2010).

Litsch, Jesse, P

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Litsch has been suffering from a penchant to loosen his strings as the game goes on. In the first five innings of his starts this season, Litsch has allowed 16 runs over 36 1/3 innings for a 3.96 ERA. In the sixth inning, Litsch has combined to allow 10 runs on 15 hits over just 4 1/3 innings with an ERA of 20.77. Litsch has been improving but definitely needs to change that trend before he's worth using in any mixed Fantasy leagues. He is best left for AL-only formats. His next scheduled start is for Sunday vs. Cleveland. Litsch is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA against Cleveland this season. (Updated 07/26/2010).

Chavez, Jesse, R

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Chavez began the season allowing just one run through his first seven games but was horrendous for much of May. He's been pitching much better of late but is still just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that use them. (Updated 06/23/2010).

Garcia, Freddy, S

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Garcia had not lost since May 23 against the Marlins in what was his second shortest outing of the season. He last just 2 1/3 inning in that game and recovered to go on a solid streak. Fantasy owners will hope for the same type of resiliency this time around for Garcia. He isn't a dominant pitcher by any means and won't be a huge help for you in any particular category, but he's been able to keep his team in the game and his nine wins this season have been enough to make him viable in deeper mixed leagues as a decent stopgap from time to time. His value is highest in AL-only leagues. Garcia's next start is slated for July 29 against the weak-hitting Mariners. (Updated 07/24/2010).

Lopez, Rodrigo, R

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Lopez has gone 1-3 over five July starts and has allowed at least three runs to cross the plate in each of them with a total of 26 spanning 28 2/3 innings. While not all of those runs were earned, they were still scored with him standing on the mound and the Diamondbacks have lost all but one of those them. Lopez is pitching poorly and is mainly an NL-only Fantasy option, at best. He should get another start in Week 17 (July 26-Aug. 1) on Sunday in New York against the Mets. He is 1-0 against the Mets with two runs allowed over 6 1/3 innings in his only start against them coming back in 2009. (Updated 07/27/2010).

Castro, Starlin, ss

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Castro has re-emerged as a solid option in any Fantasy league. He might not have great power yet as a young and raw shortstop, but the thin position and his strong average make him viable in mixed formats. Keep him active if you own him and consider him a stopgap if you have a need at the position. (Updated 07/28/2010).

Dominguez, Matt , 3b

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Perhaps Dominguez is starting to get the message at Double-A. He is hitting .302 (13 for 43) with two homers and three RBI in his last 10 games. He hit .296 in 2008 at Class A, so Dominguez can rake. The 2007 first-round pick is coming along very slowly in his career and we could start to hear the word bust associated with his name. Dominguez is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper. "He's always hit," Fleming said. "It's bothered him some that he hasn't hit. It's partly because we've pushed him along. But he struggled early last year and then found it. We're hoping the same scenario happens again. We'll leave him alone and let him stay in Double-A." (Updated 06/11/2010).

Ramos, Wilson, c

0010-07-29

No information available at this time (Updated 7/29/10).

Hicks has been called the next Darryl Strawberry for his speed-and-power potential. Ramos doesn't have a future in Minnesota with Joe Mauer locked up long term. Consider these two a pair of nice long-term keeper prospects worth stashing, but we don't see them making an impact this season. They could be 2011 callups if dealt to another club, though. (Updated 07/06/2010).

Blum , Geoff, 3B

0010-07-28

Elbow - 15-day DL. Might begin rehab assignment Aug. 1 (Updated - 7/28/10)

Blum figures to be nothing more than a reserve for the Astros and the deepest of NL-only leagues once he returns. He won't be a candidate to return in Fantasy Week 18 (Aug. 2-8) at this point. (Updated 07/28/2010).

Drew , J.D., RF

0010-07-28

Hamstring - Questionable for July 30 - Aug. 1 vs. Detroit (Updated - 7/28/10)

It appears as if the injury-prone Drew will avoid a trip to the disabled list, and the Red Sox won't add another casualty to their walking wounded. When healthy, Drew can contribute in mixed Fantasy leagues due to his power and run production. While he might return to the lineup as early as this weekend, check his status before placing him in the lineup for Fantasy Week 18 (Aug. 2-8). (Updated 07/28/2010).

Meche, Gil, S

0010-07-27

Shoulder - 60-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 7/27/10)

Meche's velocity has been fine -- he was hitting 96 mph in his first rehab start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas -- but he just wasn't feeling comfortable, even admitting he has had to change his arm angle to compensate for the pain. When last healthy in 2008, Meche was a respectable Fantasy option, going 14-11 with a 3.98 ERA and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings, but now you have to wonder if he'll ever hold down a regular rotation spot again. The surgery doesn't sound extensive, but then again, neither was Brandon Webb's. (Updated 07/28/2010).

Morales , Kendry, 1B

0010-06-13

Ankle - 15-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 6/13/10)

Well it doesn't look like Morales will make it back this season, so Fantasy owners not in long-term keeper leagues should drop him. Morales is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy. (Updated 07/17/2010).
