Kearns , Austin, RF Kearns not seeing many hits: Yankees OF Austin Kearns singled in the third inning Wednesday against the A's for his first hit in 20 at-bats. His last hit had come on Aug. 22 against Seattle. (Updated 09/02/2010) Kearns is not an everyday player, so there is little chance for him to get on any kind of a significant role. Outside of injuries creating more playing time for him, he is not a player we see making an impact in Fantasy. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Tejada , Miguel, SS Tejada beginning to show power: Padres SS Miguel Tejada went deep again Wednesday at Arizona -- his third homer in eight games. Of course, he's only 7 for 32 (.219) during that stretch, including his 1-for-4 performance Wednesday. (Updated 09/02/2010) The Padres play in a pitcher's park, but Tejada's power numbers have only improved since coming over from the Orioles. He still isn't the middle-of-the-order hitter he was in his prime, but he's producing well enough to suffice as a starting shortstop in mixed leagues. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Maybin, Cameron, CF Maybin goes deep for Fish: Florida OF Cameron Maybin had just one hit, but it was his seventh home run of the season. Maybin went 1 for 4 and scored twice. He's now batting .236 through his 59 games for the Marlins. (Updated 09/02/2010) Since being recalled from the minors, Maybin has gone 10 for 34 (.294) with two home runs, four RBI and five runs scored. Only one of those games saw Maybin go without a hit. While Maybin as struggled this year for the Marlins, he's been playing better down the stretch. He can be viewed a a viable option in the deepest of mixed Fantasy leagues as of right now. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Loney , James, 1B Loney drives in lone Dodger run: Dodgers 1B James Loney singled to right field on Wednesday and drove in Jamey Carroll with the hit against the Phillies in a 5-1 loss. Loney drove in the Dodgers' only run in the game and finished 1 for 1 with three walks. He's batting .275 on the year. (Updated 09/01/2010) Loney has gone 5 for 17 (.294) over his last five games with a homer and six RBI. Over 29 games in August, Loney batted .217 with a home run and 13 RBI. He really struggled in August but seemed to come on at the end of the month. If that continues, Loney can continue starting in most mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 09/01/2010). |
Kennedy , Adam, 3B Kennedy continues to lead off : Nationals 2B Adam Kennedy was placed in the leadoff spot Tuesday against the Marlins for the fourth game in a row. Kennedy, who led off for the A's most of last season, told MLB.com that has enjoyed the batting atop the National's lineup. "I try to go up there and be aggressive," Kennedy said. "Not let the pitcher think I'm up there just to take a lot of pitches." Kennedy has gone 3 for 12 with two walks and an RBI over his first three games from the leadoff spot. (Updated 08/31/2010) The Nationals flopped Kennedy and Nyjer Morgan in the batting order to try and get Morgan hitting again. The light-hitting 2B is batting just .257 on the season with three homers and 29 RBI. He offers very little in the way of of extra-base hits, and should only be used in NL-only formats at this point. (Updated 08/31/2010). |
Lowrie , Jed, SS Lowrie returns to lineup with HR: Boston INF Jed Lowrie came off the bench in his previous two appearances but was given his 15th start in August on its final day Tuesday in Baltimore. Lowrie entered the game against the Orioles hitting .283 for August over 53 at-bats with three home runs and six RBI and added to those totals. He went 2 for 3 -- the only Red Sox player to amass more than one hit -- and drove in the only two runs for Boston with a two-run homer in the fifth inning off starter Brian Matusz. That homer was his fourth of the season. Lowrie is batting .288 on the year. (Updated 08/31/2010) Lowrie has only been active for the Red Sox since late July. On the season, he has hit .288 with four homers and nine RBI in 80 at-bats. Lowrie is a part-time player for Boston. He definitely helps their team overall but he doesn't do it with any Fantasy value at this time outside of the deepest of AL-only leagues. (Updated 08/31/2010). |
Pie , Felix, CF Pie goes deep for Orioles: Orioles OF Felix Pie, who entered Tuesday's game against Boston mired in a 1-for-15 slump in his previous four games, snapped out of it with one swing. Pie gave the Orioles some breathing room in the victory as he homered for the fifth time on the season in the eighth inning. He's batting .286. (Updated 08/31/2010) Pie started 27 times in August and played in 28 games overall. He batted well over .300 and hit three homers with 11 RBI. Pie has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles and for Fantasy owners. He can definitely help out in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues at this point in the season. (Updated 08/31/2010). |
McDonald earning more at-bats: The Red Sox made it 5-3 in the eighth of the first game of a day-night doubleheader Wednesday on Darnell McDonald's RBI single. McDonald is 8 for 17 (.471) in his past seven games. (Updated 08/25/2010) McDonald has been quite a find in deeper AL-only leagues this season. The news keeps getting better right now, too. Not only is McDonald hot, but the Red Sox likely have lost both Mike Cameron (abdominal) and Jacoby Ellsbury (rib) for the season. McDonald could get more at-bats, too, because Ryan Kalish and J.D. Drew are in deep funks in August. (Updated 08/25/2010). |
Quintero behind the plate Tuesday: Astros C Humberto Quintero was in the starting lineup posted for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. He replaced Jason Castro behind the plate. Quintero is batting .229 with three home runs and 11 RBI on the season. (Updated 07/27/2010) With the emergence of Johnson, Quintero is no longer a regular for the Astros behind the plate. He might get a start or two a week, but does not hold any real Fantasy value at this time. Cut and ignore him as a backup backstop both short and long term. (Updated 07/27/2010). |
Schneider hits two-run triple: Philadelphia C Brian Schneider smacked his first triple of the season in the second inning of Monday's afternoon win over the Rockies. The triple to deep left-center field scored two runs and Schneider finished the game 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Schneider is batting .235 for the season. (Updated 07/26/2010) Schneider, after Monday's game, has gone just 4 for 23 (.174) since July started with a homer and three RBI. He doesn't play every day and when he does, he doesn't often play well. Schneider is barely worth owning in NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 07/26/2010). |
Coste released by Nationals: The Nationals have released C Chris Coste, who is out for the season after Tommy John surgery. (Updated 06/05/2010) Coste had his surgery in late May and will be out until at least the middle of the 2011 season. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 06/05/2010). |
Andino, Robert, SS No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Andino is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues. (Updated 04/13/2010). |
Bako, Paul, C No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Myers has potential for a rebound, while Martinez will get interest because of his name. The rest of these players are nothing more than organizational depth at this point. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues. (Updated 11/11/2009). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Bloomquist is having a pretty miserable offensive season as a part-timer for the Royals, but has been playing a lot more since Scott Podsednik was dealt. Continue to ignore Bloomquist in the majority of Fantasy formats. (Updated 08/25/2010). |
Lambo, Andrew, of No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Lambo received a 50-game suspension on May 1 for a second drug-related offense. He was suspended for using a "drug of abuse." He is just 21 years old, but his progression at the MLB level seemed to take a big hit with the suspension. He still has to sort out some off-the-field issues before trying to get back to working his way up to the majors and is clearly a ways away from making any Fantasy impact. (Updated 07/31/2010). |
Ibanez , Raul, LF No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Ibanez was having a great second half to a recent slump that preceded this hot stretch. Getting back on the right side of things again, consider him a solid start in all Fantasy leagues. Track his progress through the weekend before considering him for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/26/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Polanco's sore elbow will probably continue to bother him the rest of the year, hurting his production at the plate. He's batting .309 with six home runs, 43 RBI and 61 runs scored on the year. He may not be a big-time producer at the plate, but hitting in the Phillies lineup will give him plenty of chances. The veteran remains a viable Fantasy option in deeper mixed leagues. (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Suppan, Jeff, S Groin - 15-day DL. Expected to return for Sept. 1 start at Houston (Updated - 8/28/10) Suppan will be activated once rosters expand and should battle Kyle Lohse for the final spot in the rotation in St. Louis. He has had a lackluster season but has pitched better since being reunited with esteemed pitching coach Dave Duncan. It looks as though Suppan will be available for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5) but owners in NL-only formats should be the only one's concerned with the right-hander at this stage of his career. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Schoeneweis posted a 7.90 ERA and 2.12 WHIP in 15 games (13 2/3 innings) this season. If he is claimed by another team, he will be nothing more than a high-risk middle reliever with little, if any, Fantasy value. (Updated 05/20/2010). |
Hughes, Philip, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). The Yankees had won the previous six starts that Hughes had made against Toronto, but never led in this one. He came in 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA in nine road starts, but quickly fell behind and was unable to recover in what just looked like an off night for him. The Yankees announced on Tuesday that they plan to limit his innings the rest of the way and that could mean he'll be skipped from time to time, but for the moment he should be counted on to make his next start on Aug. 31 vs. Oakland. He's tentatively slated to be a two-start pitcher in Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 6), but that is not guaranteed. (Updated 08/25/2010). |
Garza, Matt, S No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Garza had won his previous two starts, but was still sharp on Saturday. Over his last three outings he's gone 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA and 16 strikeouts. The righty is 13-7 on the year and is having his best year in the majors. He did have a few rough outings this year, but for the most part has been a pretty effective pitcher. He is a solid Fantasy SP in most mixed leagues. His next start is scheduled for Friday at Baltimore in Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). In 11 starts versus the Orioles, he is 8-1 with a 3.14 ERA. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Groin - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/25/10) Given his recent progress, there is some possibility that Pettitte could return for Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 13-19), though this is still a best-case scenario. YES Network reports that the lefty would likely come back on a reduced pitch count, as the team wants to make sure he is ready for the postseason. When he does return in Fantasy, Pettitte probably won't provide as much value as he had when he was fully healthy, but he could still help owners in deeper mixed leagues. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Putz, J.J., R Knee - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/25/10) Putz has been a good find this season for owners needing a middle reliever with a high strikeout rate and low ERA and WHIP. Those owners will now need to find a replacement, as he will be out for all of Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/25/2010). |
Cecil, Brett, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Cecil is 7-1 with a 2.14 ERA in nine starts against AL East opponents this season, including 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts facing the Yankees. He has allowed no more than two runs in five of his last six starts and is providing solid ERA and WHIP numbers at a very reasonable price as he's available in 44 percent of CBSSports.com leagues and is only active in 24 percent. He'll face another pair of division rivals in a two-start week during Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5), facing the Rays and Yankees on the road. (Updated 08/25/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Hunter has a 3.16 ERA at home this season opposed to his 4.46 ERA on the road. Those numbers are startling considering what a hitter's park the Rangers have but some players excel in at home for no particular reason. It also doesn't hurt that Texas has averaged eight runs in Hunter's seven home wins. Hunter has won three of his last four decisions and has given up four earned runs or less over his last five starts. His 46-to-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio isn't that spectacular but keep Hunter and his 11 wins active in deeper mixed leagues. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday at the Royals. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
Geer, Josh, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). These players are nothing more than organizational depth at this point in their careers. Ignore them in all Fantasy leagues right now. (Updated 10/13/2009). |
Chen, Bruce, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Chen has a 4.63 ERA in August but is 4-2 in six starts. The veteran did not have a good July but has pitched surprisingly well this season for a bad Royals team. None of his numbers are eye-popping but Fantasy owners should respect that fact that he has nine wins on the year. Continue to view Chen as a viable option in AL-only formats. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Tigers. Chen is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts against Detroit this season. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Crain, Jesse, R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Heading into Tuesday's game at Texas, Crain had given up just one earned run in his last 10 appearances. "My fastball's good enough to be a very effective pitch, and it wasn't very effective, so we decided to start mixing things up and throwing breaking balls more," Crain said. "I've always had the pitches; I'm not throwing a new pitch, like some people are saying. I've always thrown my slider and my curveball; I'm just mixing them in more, keeping hitters off balance." Consider him a viable middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point. (Updated 08/26/2010). |
Mitre, Sergio, S/R No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Mitre has been pitching out of the Yankees bullpen for a few weeks now, and was actually doing a good job in relief until this outing. Mitre might get a spot start down the stretch, but remains not worth owning in anything but the deepest of AL-only leagues. (Updated 08/19/2010). |
Jenkins, Chad, rhp No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Already 22, Jenkins could rise quickly through the Blue Jays system, but considering he's only in Class A, he probably won't arrive in the majors this season. He has plenty of upside, though, so he's worth stashing in long-term keeper leagues. (Updated 04/28/2010). |
Kelly, Casey, rhp No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). While most folks would like to see a top prospect like Kelly dominate in the minors, facing adversity early in his career is not such a bad thing. "He's definitely looking at it the right way," Hazen said. I"n talking to him, his perspective is outstanding. The stuff has been really, really good. Hes got to continue to learn, and learn how and where to use his stuff, and to get through these things." Kelly also isn't too worried about his 2010 numbers. "I'd much rather be handling it here in Double A than in the big-leagues. Last year as a pitcher, I didn't have to go through that. It's definitely something that every athlete has to go through at some point in their career," Kelly said. Red Sox manager Terry Francona compares Kelly to Jon Lester, whose velocity picked up as he grew into his body. Kelly is consistently touching 94 mph this season after topping out at 92 mph last season. Kelly is still a great pitching prospect and nice long-term Fantasy keeper. However, we doubt he is called to the majors in 2010. (Updated 07/08/2010). |
Knee - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/23/10) After beginning the season as the Bucs' regular first baseman, getting optioned to the minors, and then getting recalled, Clement's playing time has dwindled to almost nothing, and now he is on the DL. Given how little he has played in recent weeks, it is safe to drop Clement in all formats, even if he rejoins the team when eligible to be activated. (Updated 08/23/2010). |
