Haileys Comet Current News

Scutaro , Marco, SS

2010-09-01

Scutaro homers through pain: Boston SS Marco Scutaro continues to play through inflammation in his right rotator cuff, reports MLB.com on Wednesday. Scutaro, who remained in the lineup in Baltimore and hit a huge two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the score at five, made an errant throw on Tuesday that proved costly and the shoulder issue is partly to blame. Manager Terry Francona said the Red Sox have backed off Scutaro's pregame drills to limit the wear and tear on his shoulder. That said, the injury has not affected his bat, as far as Francona can tell. "Anything that aggravates you, I'm sure it doesn't help," Francona said. (Updated 09/01/2010)

Scutaro has hits in 14 of his last 17 games so he continues to help Fantasy owners in that regard. Scutaro definitely needs some rest and surgery is a possibility to correct the issue. That said, Scutaro will continue playing through the pain for the time being. As long as he's in the lineup, he can be used in mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 09/01/2010).

Dunn , Adam, 1B

2010-08-31

Dunn gets back to blasting off: Nationals 1B Adam Dunn, who recently endured a 3-for-34 (.088) slump, recorded his third straight multi-hit game Monday at Florida, going 2 for 4. He homered for the second time during that stretch and also doubled, walked and drove in four runs. (Updated 08/31/2010)

Safe to say Dunn has broken out of his slump, which was inevitable for a player with his track record. His high strikeout rate leaves him vulnerable to cold stretches, but his hot stretches more than make up for them. He's one of the best pure power hitters in the game and a must-start in Fantasy. (Updated 08/31/2010).

Castillo , Luis, 2B

2010-08-29

Castillo strands four Mets: New York 2B Luis Castillo went 1 for 3 with an RBI in Sunday's win over Houston. He did strand four men on base. New York was 4 for 34 (.118) with runners in scoring position in their previous five games. (Updated 08/29/2010)

Castillo is batting .240 on the year and and 17 RBI on the year, as his role has been limited lately. The Mets have been using Ruben Tejada in the lineup more often, giving the rookie plenty of at-bats. Granted Tejada is getting starts because of his defense and not his offense, but Castillo hasn't made the most of his chances to play. He's gone 5 for 21 (.238) with two RBI over his last seven games. The veteran is a low-end NL-only option due to his limited role. (Updated 08/29/2010).

Figgins , Chone, 3B

2010-08-28

Figgins provides offense for Seattle: Seattle 3B Chone Figgins went 1 for 4 with two RBI in Friday's loss to Minnesota, but provided the Mariners with two of their three runs. Figgins struck out once and left three men stranded on base. Figgins is batting .248 with 32 RBI on the year. (Updated 08/28/2010)

Over his last 10 games, Figgins is batting .220 (9 for 41) with three RBI, two runs scored and two steals. While he started August off hot, Figgins has cooled back off as of late. He's been a big disappoint for Seattle and to Fantasy owners that expected a repeat performance of 2009. He should be considered a solid option in Rotisserie formats, and deeper mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/28/2010).

Hart , Corey, RF

2010-08-28

Hart continues strong year: Milwaukee OF Corey Hart drove in two runs on Friday against Pittsburgh, giving him 81 RBI on the year. His career high is 91, which he set in 2008. He is also one home run shy of tying his 2007 mark of 24. Hart had an RBI single in the sixth inning and then followed with an RBI double in the seventh. (Updated 08/28/2010)

Hart has been hitting in August, but hasn't had too much power over his last 11 games. During that span he's gone 12 for 42 (.286) with no home runs, six RBI and eight runs scored. He had been dealing with a strained hamstring, but seems to be slowly climbing back into his early season form. Fantasy owners should feel confident starting him again in all formats going into Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/28/2010).

Johnson , Nick, 1B

2010-08-26

Johnson's season over: Nick Johnson's season is over, as the first baseman will require a second surgery on his right wrist, according to Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Johnson struggled to a .167/.388/.306 mark in 24 games before hitting the disabled list. (Updated 08/26/2010)

It would be an understatement to say that Johnson has not worked out for the Yankees this year. Though it already appeared doubtful that he would return this season, owners still rostering Johnson can now drop him and use the slot for another player. (Updated 08/26/2010).

Ojeda , Augie, 3B

2010-08-11

Ojeda useful off bench for D-Backs: From The Sports Xchange notes: Augie Ojeda has been a dependable pinch hitter since interim manager Kirk Gibson took over July 1. In his past eight pinch-hit appearances, Ojeda is 2 for 4 with two walks, two sacrifice bunts, two runs and an RBI. Ojeda was seldom used by the old regime, and he did not make his first start of the season until June 6. That was against Colorado RHP Ubaldo Jimenez. (Updated 08/11/2010)

Ojeda is versatile, but his limited role or potential make him merely a low-end reserve for the D-Backs and the deepest of NL-only leagues at this point in his career. (Updated 08/11/2010).

Choo, Shin-Soo, RF

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Choo has four multi-hit performances in his last 11 games but seems to group his hits. He is one of the lone bright spots on the Indians, both offensively and defensively. He is five homers and five steals away from reaching the 20-20 mark for the second straight year and remains a must-start option in mixed leagues heading into Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/29/2010).

Davis , Rajai, CF

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Davis is batting .360 over his last nine games with an RBI and three steals. While he can help you out with steals, he doesn't offer much else, which makes Davis best suited for deeper mixed Fantasy leagues and Rotisserie formats. (Updated 08/30/2010).

Hafner , Travis, DH

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Hafner is not going to be an everyday player (err, hitter) for the Indians down the stretch, but if he hits he will remain in the lineup. Consider him a sleeper in deeper leagues right now, perhaps even mixed formats if he can sustain his second-half run. (Updated 08/24/2010).

Martinez , Victor, C

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Martinez is hitting .292 on the year with 13 home runs and 54 RBI. V-Mart is starting to come around as he's gone 17 for 41 (.415) with three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored over his last 10 games. Despite his lack of homers this year and trips to the disabled list, Martinez is still a must-start Fantasy catcher. Keep him active going into Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). (Updated 08/29/2010).

Salazar, Oscar, 3B

Achilles' - 15-day DL. On Class A rehab assignment (Updated - 8/23/10)

We expect Salazar to remain on a rehab stint until Sept. 1 roster expansion and get no more than token at-bats as a pinch hitter down the stretch. He could return before that and earn more at-bats, but nothing is imminent enough to make him worthy of Fantasy consideration at this point. (Updated 08/23/2010).

Teagarden , Taylor, C

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Teagarden showed some power during his second stint in the majors but still did not hit for average. The 26-year-old could make it back by the end of the season but he will only have value in the deepest of AL-only formats. He can be ignored in all formats while he's down on the farm. (Updated 08/23/2010).

Vizquel , Omar, SS

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Vizquel is batting .294 with a home run, 25 RBI, 29 runs scored and seven steals on the year. He has been getting plenty of at-bats as he has transitioned into the White Sox' every-day third baseman. The light-hitting veteran should be active in AL-only Fantasy formats at this stage in his career. (Updated 08/27/2010).

Fuld, Sam, CF

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

The speedy Fuld doesn't offer much offensively, and with the Cubs, he was the 25th man on the bench. Even with a September recall, he doesn't figure to offer much Fantasy value, so he can be ignored in all leagues. (Updated 08/23/2010).

Ryal, Rusty, 2B

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

The Diamondbacks keep Ryal around for his versatility to play all over the field. Case in point, he started in left field on Thursday before moving to third base late in the game. Still, he doesn't see regular starts and that is a big hindrance in Fantasy. Ryal has minimal Fantasy appeal, even in NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/06/2010).

Rowland-Smith, Ryan, S

Back - 15-day DL. On Triple-A rehab assignment (Updated - 8/8/10)

Rowland-Smith is 1-10 with a 6.96 ERA in 22 appearances this season for the Mariners. "I've seen the numbers," Brown said. "For a guy who has pitched well in the past, it's hard for me to pinpoint it. I haven't seen him up here, but the numbers aren't very good. I did see him the one [rehab] game where he didn't command the baseball very well. From what I understand, he was better the last time, so we'll see. That's progress, which is what we're looking for." It still sounds like Rowland-Smith is going to get a few more rehab starts and is not going to get a look with the Mariners in Week 20 (Aug. 16-22). Keep him stashed mainly in AL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/15/2010).

Baker, Scott, S

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Baker has gone 5-1 in eight starts since the All-Star break. In his 26 starts for the year, Baker is 12-9 with a 4.55 ERA. He doesn't have overpowering stuff, as he has just 129 strikeouts on the year, but he's been managing the games well lately. He should be viewed as a decent Fantasy SP in deeper mixed leagues at this stage in the season. Owners shouldn't expect flashy stats, just some consistent wins. His next start is scheduled for Thursday against Detroit. In 19 starts versus the Tigers, Baker is 6-4 with a 4.55 ERA. (Updated 08/28/2010).

Blanton, Joe, S

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Blanton finally appears to be on a roll, allowing just four runs over 19 1/3 innings in his last three outings. He had just three strikeouts on Saturday, but has 19 combined in those starts with just one walk and he appears to be in for a promising stretch run. His struggles to this point aside, now is a great time to start Blanton for his next start on Sept. 2 at Colorado and beyond. (Updated 08/28/2010).

Papelbon, Jonathan, C

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Papelbon has been lights out since blowing his sixth save of the season on Aug. 12. In six scoreless appearances since then, he's allowed one hit and three walks while striking out 10, recording four saves in that span. Keep him active in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 08/27/2010).

Scheppers, Tanner, rhp

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Of his 14 Triple-A appearances this season, Scheppers has started six of them, so has plenty of experience as a reliever and could well help the Rangers in that capacity later this season. Tellingly, he has a 1.89 ERA out of the bullpen this season and a 5.84 ERA as a starter. This move lowers his long-term Fantasy value a little, but maybe this is just a move similar to what the Rays did with David Price back in 2008, so don't give up on Scheppers just yet in keeper Fantasy formats. (Updated 07/19/2010).

Harang, Aaron, S

Back - 15-day DL. Expected to return for Aug. 31 start vs. Milwaukee (Updated - 8/29/10)

Harang's return provides a fresh arm for owners in NL-only leagues to use for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5), but mixed league owners would be well-advised to take a pass, at least for this scoring period. Harang had not been effective prior to going on the DL, but his difficulties were nothing new. This is the third straight season that he has struggled to avoid home runs and hits on balls in play. That's a bad combination, so there's little mystery as to why he owns a 5.00-plus ERA. (Updated 08/29/2010).

Howry, Bobby, R

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Howry has an ERA over 7.00 between his two teams this season. Being that he has not collected a save since 2008, Fantasy owners should continue to ignore the 36-year-old while he's looking for a new job. (Updated 07/30/2010).

Penny, Brad, S

Back, shoulder - 15-day DL. Might be out for the season (Updated - 8/11/10)

Penny pitched fairly well while healthy with a 3-4 record and a solid 3.23 ERA over nine starts with 35 Ks. Penny is not going to return before the very end of August, it seems, and might not even start when he does come back. Fantasy owners could continue to stash Penny, if they have extra DL spots. If he does return to the rotation, he could be viable in mixed Fantasy leagues again. (Updated 08/10/2010).

Condrey, Clay, R

Elbow - 60-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 7/21/10)

Condrey is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues. (Updated 07/21/2010).

Lowe, Mark, R

Back - 60-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 7/29/10)

Lowe has a slim chance to return to action this season, so continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats as a minimally-viable RP. (Updated 08/14/2010).

Mota, Guillermo, R

Leg - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-September (Updated - 8/23/10)

Mota has one save this season and 35 strikeouts on 49 innings pitched. He is not the dominant reliever that he used to be so he should only be stashed away in the deepest of NL-only formats that utilize middle men while he's on the shelf. (Updated 08/23/2010).

Walker, Tyler, R

Shoulder - 15-day DL. Out for the season (Updated - 7/27/10)

Walker is at risk of never pitching in the major leagues again. He was merely a middle reliever anyway. Cut and ignore him in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 08/02/2010).

Rhodes, Arthur, R

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Rhodes worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam on Friday and has been having an excellent season at age 40. He has 34 strikeouts compared to just 14 walks in 42 appearances and has been one of the better setup men in the game. Although he does not stand to see many save opportunities, Rhodes remains worth using in NL-only leagues as an RP. (Updated 07/16/2010).

Outman, Josh, S/R

Elbow - 60-day DL. Might be out for the season (Updated - 6/28/10)

Outman is hoping to pitch for the A's sometime in September. However, there is still no timetable for his return. He even he is able to pitch this season, Outman will be nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men. He might compete for a rotation spot next spring, though. (Updated 08/29/2010).

Sanches, Brian, R

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Sanches has been effective so far out of the bullpen, and has one hold on the season. But as a middle reliever for the Marlins, his Fantasy value lies in deeper NL-only formats that use true middle men. (Updated 05/14/2010).

Ni, Fu-Te, R

No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10).

Ni was very effective in a situational lefty role in 2009, but so far this season, he has had trouble finding the strike zone. Though he could be much better than he has shown this year, the limited number of innings dictated by his role renders him with very little value for any Fantasy format. (Updated 06/30/2010).
