Crisp , Coco, CF Crisp looking for strong finish: A's OF Coco Crisp went 1 for 5 with an RBI in Wednesday's game against the Yankees in New York. Crisp hit .300 in August with three homers and 12 RBI. He also stole nine bases during the month. (Updated 09/02/2010) Crisp continues to make for a good start in Rotisserie formats because of what he offers in the speed department. He has also been a surprisingly decent source for batting average lately to go with a healthy amount of runs scored, making him a decent play in most formats as a low-end starter in the outfield. (Updated 09/02/2010). |
Gamel, Mat , 3B Gamel among Brewers callups: The Brewers recalled third baseman Mat Gamel, starting pitcher Jeremy Jeffress and reliever Carlos Villanueva on Wednesday. Gamel hit .304 with 14 homers, 74 RBI, 63 runs, three steals, a .388 on-base percentage and a .496 slugging percentage in 359 minor-league at-bats in 2010. (Updated 09/01/2010) Gamel is a slugging corner infielder with long-term potential still. Consider him a potential flier in deeper NL-only and long-term keeper formats. We tend to doubt he plays enough to impact most formats, though. (Updated 09/01/2010). |
Allen, Brandon, 1B Allen's 2010 debut a grand one: Making an impressive 2010 debut with Arizona, converted first baseman Brandon Allen hit his first career grand slam and made several rangy catches in left field to lead his team to victory Wednesday against the Padres. "Unbelievable," said Diamondbacks SP Barry Enright. "I cannot say enough." Allen made his way through Arizona's minor-league system with his bat, slugging 25 homers with 86 RBI in 107 games at Triple-A Reno this season. Looking to find a way to get his bat to the majors, Arizona started occasionally sending Allen out to left field this season in Reno, an experiment that had gone relatively well because of his athleticism. Allen earned a September call-up on Wednesday and found himself in the starting lineup, batting eighth and playing left field. "He was very comfortable out there," Diamondbacks interim manager Kirk Gibson said. Allen finished 2 for 3. (Updated 09/01/2010) Allen's power potential goes without saying. His plate discipline, on the other hand, deserves a mention. He complied a .405 on-base percentage at Reno even though he hit only .261. With the Diamondbacks in rebuilding mode, he'll probably get most of the starts in left field the rest of the way. He's worth a flier in deeper leagues if you're looking for cheap power numbers. (Updated 09/01/2010). |
Barmes , Clint, 2B Barmes back, gets in lineup: Rockies 2B/SS Clint Barmes returned from the bereavement list and was in the starting lineup at shortstop for Monday's game against the Giants. He last played on Aug. 25 and is 7 for 47 (.149) in August with two RBI and 10 strikeouts. Barmes filled in for Troy Tulowitzki, who was out with a groin injury. (Updated 08/30/2010) Barmes lost his starting job before going on the bereavement list and does not stand to see much playing time down the stretch. He might fill in for Tulo if he cannot play over the next few days but Fantasy owners would be wise to stay away from Barmes during the current scoring period. He is batting .240 this season with eight homers and 49 RBI but is more of an NL-only option when going well. (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Lowell , Mike, 3B Lowell gaining more confidence: Red Sox 1B/3B Mike Lowell went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a strikeout in Sunday's loss to the Rays. He reached on an infield single in his first at-bat before doubling to leadoff the fifth inning. He scored three batters later on Yamaico Navarro's single, giving him 14 runs scored on the year. Before the game Lowell told MLB.com that despite his .256 average in August, the 36-year-old is still confident in his hitting. "Absolutely," said Lowell. "I've felt pretty good. I've been hitting them right at people for a few days, but it's just the way it goes. You can't place a steering wheel on it." (Updated 08/30/2010) Lowell has gotten the bulk of the starts at first base after Kevin Youkilis went down and has not been bothered by his hip too much. "My hip feels fine," said Lowell. "I haven't had any problems pushing on this turf which usually is a lot tougher than a regular field. I haven't felt anything, so I'm very happy from that standpoint. But yeah, you'd love to get more hits instead of just scraping one by here or there." He has two homers and eight RBI in August but has not gone deep since Aug. 10. Fantasy owners shouldn't rely on Lowell at this stage of his career but he can still contribute enough to be considered a viable option in AL-only and some deeper mixed leagues. (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Rollins , Jimmy, SS Rollins has 3-hit night: Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins picked up three hits atop the order on Friday night against the Padres. Rollins singled twice and added a double as he scored two runs. He also walked as Rollins was on base four times in the game. Rollins' batting average sits at an ugly .248 but he's batting .267 since Aug. 3 with two homers, eight RBI and six stolen bases. (Updated 08/28/2010) Rollins has scored 16 runs in August and has continued to contribute despite less-than-stellar batting averages. Rollins does the little things and will be in there every day when he's healthy. You can continue to think of him as a solid option in all mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
Olivo back behind plate: Colorado C Miguel Olivo was back in the lineup for Friday's game against Los Angeles. Olivo is rotating with Chris Iannetta, pretty much every game behind home plate. In 11 games in August, Olivo is batting .095 (4 for 42) with three RBI. (Updated 08/27/2010) Olivo is having his worst month of the season. His awful play has resulted in many Fantasy owners giving up on him. Granted sharing time behind the plate hurts his value, but these numbers bring him down even further. He is a risky start in deeper mixed leagues right now. Owners should bench him if they can and hope he can turn thing around heading into September. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
Soriano improving in August: LF Alfonso Soriano hit his team-leading 21st homer Wednesday, a solo homer in the ninth inning. It was a big series at Washington for Soriano, who homered twice, doubled and tripled. (Updated 08/26/2010) Soriano had hit around .240 since May, but he is hot right now and a streaky hitter worth using in all leagues when he is going well. Consider him a nice sleeper in mixed formats for Fantasy Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5) if he stays hot through the weekend. (Updated 08/26/2010). |
Bard , Josh, C Bard starts post grand slam: Mariners C Josh Bard got a start on Saturday against the Yankees. Bard made just his fourth start in August. Coming into the game on Saturday, Bard had base hits in only one of his three appearances this month. That game came on Aug. 14 in Cleveland when Bard went 4 for 5 with a grand slam home run. The slam was the first of his career. (Updated 08/21/2010) Bard had a grand night in Cleveland is seeing a little more playing time thanks to it. Still, until he gets consistent starts, he has no real Fantasy value. (Updated 08/21/2010). |
Bonifacio looks good Friday: Marlins OF Emilio Bonifacio had a nice night on Friday in a win over Houston. Bonifacio hit a sacrifice fly RBI to right field in the first inning and added an RBI single in the seventh. He also scored two runs. Bonifacio finished the game going 2 for 3 with two RBI and is batting .246 on the year. (Updated 08/21/2010) Bonifacio made just his fifth start in August on Friday and has appeared in 12 games overall. He has gone 4 for 23 (.174) over that stretch with two RBI. Despite his performance on Friday, Bonifacio has really struggled and really only has value in NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/21/2010). |
Blalock , Hank, 3B Blalock released by Rays: Tampa Bay released DH Hank Blalock, who they designated for assignment on June 29. He now becomes a free agent. Blalock played in 26 games with the Rays this season, batting .254 with one home run and three doubles in 63 at-bats. (Updated 07/09/2010) Blalock didn't get much of a tryout with Tampa Bay, but then he didn't do much with the opportunity they gave him. With other options, like Willy Aybar and Matt Joyce, available, they could afford to let Blalock go. If the veteran signs with another team, he could have some value in league-specific formats, as he may still be able to provide some power. (Updated 07/09/2010). |
Butler , Billy, 1B Butler did not play in Friday's 15-4 rout of Kansas City because of a sore right hand.(Updated 8/31/10) STATS LLCAdvice The Royals plan to give him some rest. "He's been playing with it for weeks and it's just time to let him heal and maybe have a big September," manager Ned Yost said. Butler amassed two hits on Sunday and has hit safely in 93 consecutive series. Butler might be playing injured, but he's still producing for the Royals and that is what Fantasy owners should care about most. Definitely realize he isn't 100 percent healthy, but continue starting Butler in most mixed Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/30/2010). |
Ankiel , Rick, CF No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Ankiel has hit a little better lately, batting .300 (9 for 30) over his last nine games, so maybe this homer is a sign of things to come. The converted pitcher is normally a decent source of power, though not much else. You can leave him for NL-only leagues, especially since he's a platoon player. (Updated 08/24/2010). |
Hairston , Scott, LF No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Hairston drove in a run on Friday night but he did not get a base hit. That leaves him with one lonely hit thus far in seven August games. He's 1 for 17 (.059) in August with two RBI and three strikeouts. He isn't playing every day and clearly isn't contributing too often. Leave Hairston for the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/14/2010). |
Harris , Willie, LF No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Harris hasn't done much since he hit his last home run on Aug. 19. Since that game he is batting .153 (2 for 13) with two RBI. Because he isn't an every day player Harris should only be an option in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). In 59 games for the Pirates' Class A Bradenton club, Sanchez was hitting .314 with four home runs, 35 RBI, 31 runs and two stolen bases. Sanchez has long-term potential, but he won't be a candidate to make the Pirates roster in spring 2011 at this point. Consider him a potential midseason callup next year, though. Stash him only in long-term keeper formats. (Updated 07/18/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Spilborghs is not an everyday player for the Rockies but he does see consistent at-bats off the bench. Still, hitting .269 on the season with nine homers and 27 RBI over 260 at-bats, Spilborghs really only has value in NL-only Fantasy leagues. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
Winn , Randy, RF No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Winn is 7 for 24 (.292) in August and is batting .269 since coming over from the Yankees in early June. He does not play everyday but the veteran can still get it done when called upon. But seeing as he will receive limited at-bats down the stretch, continue to view Winn as a viable option only in the deepest of NL-only formats. (Updated 08/27/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Kazmir is now 1-7 with an 8.29 ERA over his last nine starts, after winning the previous four. He has only pitched more than five innings once over that span and has struggled with his command, issuing 12 walks over his last four starts. Fantasy owners that have been patient with Kazmir might want to start benching him in mixed leagues. He is scheduled to make his next start Thursday at Oakland. Kazmir is 1-1 with 11.12 ERA in two starts against Oakland this season. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Martinez signed in July 2009 with Philadelphia, his fifth team in a big-league career that began in 1992. He went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts down the stretch and reached the World Series for the second time. He has compiled a 219-100 record and a 2.93 ERA in 18 seasons, won five ERA titles and three strikeout crowns. Cut and ignore Martinez in all Fantasy leagues right now. He might never pitch in the majors again. (Updated 08/05/2010). |
Chacin, Jhoulys , rhp No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). This was Chacin's second straight win, as he's allowed just one earned run in 14 2/3 innings, while striking out 16 batters. He's filling in for the injured Jeff Francis (left shoulder tendinitis), who may throw a simulation game this week. There is no guarantee for Chacin to remain in the rotation with Francis and Aaron Cook getting closer to returning. He's slated to face Philadelphia on Thursday, but if Cook is ready he'll get the nod. Fantasy owners should monitor this situation moving forward. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Bruney signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers but never made it to the majors before being released again. He is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men. He can be ignored in Fantasy until he reemerges in the bigs. (Updated 07/02/2010). |
Bush, David, S No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Bush is 7-11 with a 4.71 ERA on the year, and he has just 90 strikeouts in his 147 innings of work in 2010. He doesn't have overpowering stuff and walks too many batters (54), which hurts his Fantasy value. At this time Bush should be viewed as an NL-only Fantasy SP, with very little upside. He's scheduled to face Philadelphia on Saturday in Week 22 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). In nine career starts versus the Phillies, Bush is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
Cain, Matt, S No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Tough break for Cain on Sunday as he pitched well enough to earn the win. Still, he has been very good of late, posting a 2.66 ERA over his last nine starts. He only has four wins over that stretch, but is still pitching well enough to be used most mixed leagues. He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at Los Angeles. Cain is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this season. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Hendrickson is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point. This new role might actually make him a more effective reliever for the O's and Fantasy owners. (Updated 08/02/2010). |
Lowe, Derek, S No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Lowe has lost his last three decisions but just has a 4.32 ERA in August. Sunday's performance did not help and it marked the first time this season he did not last at least five innings. Lowe has bounced back from bad outings before but he needs a win in the worst way. Continue to view the 37-year-old as a viable option in mixed leagues as long as he is pitching for a first-place team. His next start is scheduled for Friday at the Marlins again. In two starts against Florida this season, Lowe has a 9.34 ERA. (Updated 08/29/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Volstad is now 4-1 since being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans and looked very sharp in Friday's win. It was only the third time this season he has pitched at least seven innings and third time all year he hasn't issued a walk. Volstad has only allowed three runs over his last 14 innings pitched and should be used in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues while he is pitching this well. He will look to keep it going when he makes his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Nationals. Volstad is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts against Washington this season. (Updated 08/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Martis made 15 starts for Washington last season, going 5-3 with a 5.25 ERA. The Nationals could probably have used him at some point this year with the injury problems they've had in their rotation, but Martis clearly hasn't been pitching well enough to deserve a promotion. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy play. (Updated 08/02/2010). |
Elbert, Scott, lhp No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Elbert was the Dodgers' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2009, but arm troubles have set him back. Due to his current state and placement in the minors, his only Fantasy value lies in long-term keeper leagues. (Updated 06/12/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). MacDougal's minor-league numbers leave a lot to be desired, but he throws hard and has had periods of success in the majors. He won't get any save chances, though, so he's not worth owning in Fantasy at this time. (Updated 07/28/2010). |
No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Jackson is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, if he returns to the majors. Ignore him. (Updated 08/10/2010). |
Decker, Jaff, of No information available at this time (Updated 8/30/10). Decker is an elite slugging prospect long term, but he won't have a real chance to win a roster spot in spring 2011 at this point. Consider him a potential midseason callup next year, but he is merely a long-term keeper stashee right now. (Updated 08/25/2010). |
